Homeschooling Theme: The Very Hungry Caterpillar

This book by Eric Carle has been a regular feature at the boys' bedtime ritual since they were just months old. Though we haven't read it to Marcus for well over 2 years, we still read it to Chipsy whenever he requests for it. This was the first book Marcus got as a present from the Bosclers when he was born. It was so tattered and used after 2 years that E bought Nicholas a replacement which came with the caterpillar stuff toy.

For a while, the toy was often chucked in a corner. Ignored and forgotten. Finally, it is getting the attention it deserves from the toddler who would hold it in bed, alongside his Piggy. As we read to him, he would pretend the caterpillar was really chomping down on the pears and strawberries. It is always entertaining to hear him moan loudly as if it really had a stomachache. He knows the book so well now that I sometimes overhear him recite the story to himself as he plays with other toys.

Recently, I did a homeschooling study with the boys based on the book and Nicholas watched the play by Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia last month as we wound up the learning. See my earlier post here.

The boys had tons of fun working on crafts related to this theme.

Nicholas did the 'Caterpillar on the Leaf'.

Then they created many butterflies using diffferent materials.

We also did some art appreciation on butterfly and caterpillar, and learnt about metamorphosis. I just love it that the boys absorb knowledge like sponges. Even little Chipsy can understand enough to relate back to me the life cycle of the butterfly.

All this was done sometime ago, and we have since moved on to other crafts and projects which I will feature in the blog over the next few weeks.

Hello,

I stumbled upon your blog recently and have been an avid fan ever since. What you're doing is truly inspiring - and I'll be happy if I can do for my 3 month old baby half of what you do for your boys! Kudos to you!

Best regards,
June

Hi June, welcome to my blog and may I also say, welcome to motherhood! I guess you are a first time mum. :) I am pleased that you find what we do daily interesting. It is very fun for me and my 2 boys. So when your gal is older, feel free to use some of the ideas here and try them with her. :)
