I gave him 3 colours and a paintbrush which he used very sparingly, preferring to use his fingertips and hands instead. He thoroughly immersed himself in his work for the entire 40 min, all the while standing and occasionally moving around the rectangular table to paint the different corners of his "canvas".

Impressive!...40MINS! We must do an art session one of these days and let the kids just unleash their creativity together. I'm sure every art piece is just priceless :)
Thanks! It would be real fun to watch all 4 of them working together! We will probably need to find a good outdoor venue for this kind of activitiy. :)
