My 4yo did a collage one day using magazine pages to create a gorgeous 'Tree in Autumn'.
I showed the boys how to select the pages we need from an old magazine and tear them up before glueing onto a paper to create the picture we want.
I created the green tree on the right with both boys' helping to glue and paste. The red tree on the left was entirely the 4yo's work. He added the sun on the top right hand corner.
It was really funny to see how the kids were so hesitant in the beginning when I tore up a few pages in front of them. I could see their eyes grew as large as plates and jaws dropped to the floor as they watched me destroying the beautiful magazine. They were as silent as a hawk for a few minutes, just plain stunned. Then I realised why they reacted this way.
My boys have been raised so far to always look after their books and never to destroy anything on purpose. So they have never ever torn a book or paper. And they were always so apologetic when they did a little damage to their books, albeit accidentally.
After hearing my explanation and assurance that they are permitted to tear this magazine, M got started happily. By then, N had decided he wasn't keen anymore and moved on to play with toys.
