Craft: Making an Octopus

To complement the learning, we have been spending time reading poetry and books about octopus, appreciating art work found in different books and paintings, discussing about the properties of octopuses, and even singing a song about Octopus. So of course, I have to introduce a craft on making this beautiful creature.

This is not exactly a piece of cake for a 2 yo, so I had to guide him a little. With some step-by-step instructions and some demonstrations at parts, he got the idea and got on to complete it by himself.

Materials required:
1 small paper bowl
8 strips of crepe paper
glue and paint

He gave up using the brush very quickly and preferred to use his hand to massage the "octopus".

The octopus lost 2 of its arms soon after it was dried. Being so delicate, the arms practically just "fall off" whenever Chipsy touched it.

I love it whenever he sings the Octopus song (which I learnt with Marcus from Growing Up Gifted 2 years ago) with me.

"Octopus, in the sea
You have six more arms than me.
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight
Octopus, your arms are great!"

He is close to singing it perfectly now.

hi contentedmom, thanks! :)

Yes, Marcus wrote every word in his first book all by himself. I let him decide what he wants to write, what to draw and how to draw for every page. Then he writes them. There are some words which he couldn't spell, like 'chimney', so I wrote them on paper and he copied onto his book. He was the one who came up with all the sentences for every page, so he is the author and illustrator of his book.

My credit at best, is just to put the pages together and make it look like a book. :)
