Right on Top

I really should think of an appropriate reward for M.

After studying the results analysis provided by the school and the chats with his subject teachers at the Parent-Teacher-meeting (PTM) this week, it is clear the boy has done exceptionally well in the Primary 3 SA1 exams vis-a-vis the cohort. He deserves some form of meaningful recognition from us. After all, he has worked hard and achieved excellence.

The boy is more than delighted with his high Band 1 scores for all subjects and the nearly perfect scores for 3 out of 4 subjects. Perhaps what is truly unexpected is for him to be the only child in his Chinese class, which is also the top chinese class of cohort, to achieve the 30/30 score for Chinese oral. Given his current ability, I had expected him to excel anyway, though I never imagined his standard would surpass his peers by this much.

At the PTM, the Chinese teacher was all praises for M's Chinese standard and excellent learning attitude. He was visibily surprised to learn that my son was a 'potato' just a few years ago and at one point, had outrightly professed his dislike for the language. Things can't be more different now. M enjoys learning Chinese and is highly self-motivated to improve his grasp of the Chinese language. Again, a testatment of my long-time belief that success begets success.

We have probably reached the tipping point sometime late last year or early this year. All my years of coaching to push him past the hurdle and achieve initial success was to fuel his motivation. I can't be happier to see how well my efforts have paid off. I am hopeful that we have crossed the biggest obstacle in his journey of mastering the Chinese language,  and going forward, we will only need to maintain a consistent effort in revision for him to excel.

All other subject teachers were as generous in their appraisals of his abilities, attitude and character. Oh, my little boy! :>

For now, I am going to just enjoy the much-deserved one month break in June and try *very* hard not to think of the Continual Assessments (CA2) that will occur in August and the SA2 in October.

M's story: The Curvature

The 8-year-old started this piece today in his free time.

Looks unfinished. He was probably interrupted by dinner.

By the time I saw this, he was already in bed. I am impressed and fascinated with his idea. Must bug him to continue soon. Can't wait for the rest of the story.

(I haven't written much about him lately in this blog, but he is very into science fiction these days.)

Mama's Guilt

I always feel VERY guilty whenever she falls asleep in this stroller. The pictures say it all.

Since we gave away our 8kg Aprica that comes with 4 reclining positions a few months ago, she has been out and about in this Maclaren Volo.

I do love it that this Volo weighs only 4kg and I can close and open it with one hand (while carrying her in the other arm) and still light enough for me to lift it in and out of the taxi's boot (whenever taxi drivers don't bother to help).

The downside is the seat can't be reclined and there is no firm back support. For a heavier toddler, it won't be a problem. But it doesn't help that she is tiny.

Despite checking out numerous brands, I haven't found one model that is as lightweight enough and still provides a firm back support with at least one reclining position.

I have been using the Volo since 2005, so both boys survived this phase of napping in it, though I was also nearly eaten alive by guilt in those years. I have thought of replacing it at least a dozen times, but never gotten round to doing so, simply because having one as lightweight is an important factor and the lack of storage space at home means keeping three strollers (including the Aprica) would be out of question.

This particular photo makes my heart ache. :<

She looks so adorable. But it must be awfully uncomfortable.

(I adjusted her after the quick shot.)

E reminds me often that she will outgrow it sooner than I think.

In the meantime, I avoid heading out close to her nap times. She is already spending very little time in the stroller even when we are out, preferring to walk and run around. Perhaps she will be fine in another few months.

Knock, Knock

Knock Knock
Who's there?
Cash
Cash-who? (cashew)
No thanks
Peanuts (pee-nutzz)

the words in brackets are what the tot would say instead.

This is a little joke that the toddler picked up almost immediately after I said it to her one morning. I heard it on the The Ellen DeGeneres Show while nursing her, laughed out loud and repeated to her.

Ever since, she would tell it with great amusement and bursting into laughter immediately after. Lucky me to hear her version several times a day too. Haha.
